Fact or Fiction ??
The Squatter's chair may be related to a piece of Chinese furniture called a 'Drunken Lord's Chair', sometimes also referred to as 'moon-gazing' chairs. This design offers an informal comfort to its occupant. Chairs of this sort, which appear to have become fashionable in the mid-Qing period, are characterized by their tilted back-rests and extended arm-rests. Some examples provide the added luxury of a cylindrical head-rest and a pull-out leg-rest. It is impossible now to know if the 'Squatter's chair' was an independent invention or was an idea brought out from China or from India where it was a 'Planter's Chair'.
